UN:Me: A Psychological Thriller Merging Survival Horror and Among Us Mechanics

The latest Day of the Devs online presentation revealed a number of fascinating upcoming titles, but one in particular has seized attention: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player adventure seems to fuse together the oppressive atmosphere of a Silent Hill game with the suspicion-driven core of Among Us.

"It's a unique game where a young woman containing several human souls within her needs to flee from a labyrinth of the mind," explains producer Yasukazu Kawai.

Entering a Fractured Consciousness

In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed heroine who appears to be of teenage years. Within her exist four separate souls, all possessing unique anxieties and drives. These souls can seize control spontaneously, unleashing their innermost phobias upon her suddenly.

Judging by revealed footage, much of the action unfolds within a eerie hospital, though other scenes show the protagonist navigating a desolate chapel.

A World of Personal Dread

"What are you fearful of? What causes you uneasy?" poses game director Shun Sasaki. "Heights. Confined spaces. People in power. Things that seem trivial to others can activate something primal inside us. This game delves into that concept — anxieties that are specific to every individual."

The central mechanic involves managing whichever soul emerges at a particular moment. However, these identities will change against your will as you play. While exploring, every persona's anxieties become amplified and attack the protagonist one after another. When the soul changes, so does the specific fear the player encounters.

Eerie Visuals and a Fatal Decision

Initially, UN:Me shares noticeable aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill franchise. The hospital is filled with nurses all sporting the identical visage, with disturbingly broad grins. Patients in the waiting room have large flowers where their heads are. Floral motifs are an ever-present element, contrasting natural beauty with supernatural dread.

Yet, UN:Me presents a unique twist. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four entities haunting the heroine is the "true" one. "All four personas asserts that the body belongs to them," notes a creator. "Throughout the game, you need to figure out who is real."

After a player believes a soul is fake, they are forced to destroy it. However, since every entity can lie or obfuscate the truth, it is very easy to choose incorrectly.

"Maybe you've already destroyed the real [soul] by your own actions," the narration suggests. "The final entity standing could be a fraud. In any case, your choices are final."

UN:Me does not yet have a publicly announced release date, but it is available to follow on digital storefronts.
