The EU could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the US on five European individuals working on fighting digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’

European leaders including Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions were placed on figures who have been at the heart of campaigns to enact laws governing US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to coerce US companies to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the decision.

The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as several activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
