Cancellieri Displays Brief Sparks of Genius in Positive Aspect for Unstable Lazio

The atmosphere at Lazio's home ground was anything but joyful on Saturday afternoon. The home side was losing against Torino, a team that had conceded 10 goals while scoring only two in their last five league matches. Supporters from the Curva Nord were wrapping up their most recent demonstration in a long-running conflict with president Claudio Lotito.

The Campaign Coming Unstitched?

Was Lazio's season coming unstitched, or did there exist any cohesion maintaining its structure in the first place? Lazio reinstated Maurizio Sarri as head coach during the off-season, before he admitted that the club had not mentioned the transfer ban they were set to be hit with for accounting issues. Rumours that his departure was imminent were unfounded, but he did say that Lotito had "swindled" him.

Lazio were just as chaotic during matches as off the field, overcoming Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but falling short in their other first five games, featuring the derby della Capitale. From one game to the next, it's been difficult to determine if they're getting better or imploding.

The Youngster's Unexpected Presence

At least one man kept smiling through it. Matteo Cancellieri had not been expected to feature for Lazio this season. He completed last season with Parma on loan and, at the start of the off-season, Lazio were pushing for him to stay there a while longer. The registration embargo forced a rethink. They were unable to thin their squad lacking backup options.

Cancellieri arrived in the first place under Sarri's first spell, at that time a 20-year-old alumnus of Verona's academy. He made 20 league appearances with the club in the 2022-23 season, almost all of those from the bench. The ex- sporting director, Igli Tare, whose tenure ended following that term, would later accuse Sarri of "promising everyone Cancellieri would be a star then never playing him."

Finding His Natural Fit

It's possible the coach was persistently working to identify the nature of his skill set. Labeled as a flank player on arrival, Cancellieri instead found himself most of that campaign as a struggling deputy to Ciro Immobile in the striker role. In 63 appearances during spells with Empoli and Parma in the past two years, his tally was seven goals. Shoehorn
